Long-chain omega-3 polyenoic fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are among the most oxidatively labile fatty acids. For this reason, despite the high quality processing technology, KIDS products are more demanding in terms of storage and general handling. We therefore recommend following a few basic and simple principles to prevent premature oxidation or contamination of the products.
A brief summary of why proper storage is important is included in the text below.
In general, we always recommend that products are not stored in direct sunlight/light, but rather in a dark place (cabinet), or out of the box, which provides some protection from light. As a rule, storage at room temperature up to 25 °C is sufficient, but sometimes it may be preferable to store the product in a refrigerator.
It is recommended to use the products within 3 months of opening.
When should baby products be stored in the refrigerator?
• In the case of the original unopened packaging, it is sufficient to store the product in a dark place at room temperature up to 25 °C. Under these conditions, the product will not be subject to oxidation and will retain the same quality throughout the expiry date.
• In the case of an already opened and used product, the oil is exposed to airborne oxygen and potential secondary contamination (from the air). Nevertheless, there is no need for any special storage measures, provided that the product is consumed within a couple of weeks (typically situations where several children or e.g. mothers with children use it together). If you keep the product open for a longer period of time (i.e. up to 3 months), we recommend placing it in the refrigerator.
TIP! If you struggle with the smell of omega-3 fatty acids, we also recommend storing the product in the refrigerator. Refrigeration of the product reduces the specific taste (odor), making it easier for some individuals to consume.
How to prevent contamination of products?
• It is quite easy for products to become contaminated and spoiled if not handled properly. It is therefore important to avoid contact of the pipette with mucous membranes, saliva and skin - be careful of licking etc. Children, in particular, often ask for separate application - however, in view of the contamination mentioned, we recommend that an adult should administer the pipette.
